At the very onset, I am enthralled to use a quote of former President of\u00a0USA Mr. Barack Obama<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. Its about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it\u2019s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is my proud prerogative to welcome all the readers and visitors to the Department of Geography, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla (UGC NAAC Accredited \u201cA\u201d Grade University)<\/strong>. The department of geography has been established in August 1989 with the initial intake of 15 students and the first batch passed out in June 1991. Subsequently, M.Phil Course was introduced during\u00a0 Sept-Oct. 1991 and some students were also enrolled in the PhD programme. Since then, a large number of students have passed out from the department and many of them are serving in different capacities within and outside the state. Apart from\u00a0Masters Degree, about 30 students\u00a0<\/strong>have received Doctoral degree in Geography from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla and around\u00a0160 students<\/strong>\u00a0have completed their\u00a0M.Phil Degree.\u00a0<\/strong>Currently, the intake in Master Programme is 35 including15 non-subsidized seats.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 faculty members of the department are contributing to the cause and promotion of geographical knowledge and have published around 200 research papers in journals of national and international repute. They are working on various research projects funded by\u00a0UGC, ICSSR, ICHR, DST<\/strong>\u00a0and other funding agencies. At present, the department has a faculty strength of four teachers (One Professor, One Associate Professor and Two Assistant Professors) and offers research in physical as well as human geography as broader themes.<\/p>\n

The students admitted in the department find best academic climate\u00a0 of study perfectly blended with extra curricular activities. The strong teacher-taught relationships help students not only achieving\u00a0 academic excellence but also in their overall personality development.\u00a0 I value the decision of\u00a0 students to choose Himachal Pradesh University as their Alma mater and department of Geography as their choice of professional field.<\/p>\n
